Get your website ready for SEO Part One

Did you know that there are many areas of your site that you can easily optimise in order to make sure that your site complies with Google’s quality guidelines and therefore help your site rank better.

Here are a few things you can check today:

How fast does your website load?

Check your site to see how quickly it loads, looking out for larger sized images, bloated code etc. Make sure all your images are optimised for the web, nothing gives a worse user experience then waiting for huge images to download that have not been resized properly

Broken Links:

As the site gets developed and new content is added and old content is deleted, you would be surprised how many old pages are still linked to. Do a scan of your site for broken links and once you have found them redirect them to the new page or if a new page does not exist simply redirect them to the homepage.

A great tool we use to scan for broken links is Xenu. It gives you a full report on your broken links, what pages are missing and what pages link to them.

It is a free download sold the price is right too. You can download it free at http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html

Tag Your Site Properly

Make sure that use the correct tags such as your title tag, meta description, h1 and strong tags.

Title Tag

This is the title will be shown on your search engine results page so make sure it is descriptive tried to avoid spam me looking tags like Keyword one keyword to KEYWORD three etc and instead go for something that describes your site using your keywords that will encourage somebody to click to your website. Do not confuse this with actual web page title on your page copy. The title tag is located in the head section of your website between the <title></title> tags. Keep this limit under 55 characters if you can order it may be truncated by the search engines.

Meta description

While this is not used by search engines to rank your site. It can be displayed on search engine results for your website’s description. Try to keep this description under 160 characters

H1 Tag

Use this for the title of your page and try to only use this tag once per page as it signifies to search engines must be actual page is about and is your most important heading.

Other headings and important contacts can be highlighted using the h2 h3 tags etc and the strong tags.

Alt Tags
add an alt tag to your image to let search engines know what the image is about, it also helps with website accessibility. Do not stuff your alt tags with keywords as this has not worked since the 90s.
