Yahoo has aspirations to reclaim its former prestigious place in Internet search. In what will be a financial blow for Google, Firefox’s default search engine is switching from Data-Mining giant, Google to Yahoo in the United States.
“Today, I’m thrilled to announce that we’ve entered into a five-year partnership with Mozilla to make Yahoo the default search experience on Firefox across mobile and desktop.,” Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer announced in her blog this week. She weint on to say “This is the most significant partnership for Yahoo in five years and we’re so proud that Mozilla has chosen us as their long-term partner in search.”.
Yahoo sold its search business to Microsoft five years ago, and Microsoft’s Bing powers Yahoo search results page.
“We are involving the midpoint of the 10-year agreement” with Microsoft, Mayer stated after reporting outcomes for Yahoo’s financial third quarter of 2014. “We might want to consider modifications on both sides. So Microsoft has some rights at that point, so do we. We’re resolving this with Microsoft.”.
Mozilla has been collaborating with Yahoo for months on the collaboration, and also relationships with Yahoo’s brand-new Chief Executive Officer has excelled, Baker claimed.
The new search service will come to people using Firefox in the United States in December. In return for becoming the new default search provider, Yahoo will honour Firefox’s “Do Not Track” service meaning it will not track your web surfing habits in order to serve you more relevant ads if you select that option. This should reinforce Mozillas position on being the Browser that is committed to user privacy.
Firefox users perform One Hundred Billion searches a year, which means that Google has lost a huge amount of traffic. however, it is an easy matter to change your default search engine back to Google should you not be happy with it’s search engine results.
Google still has it’s own Chrome Web Browser which is very popular so they will still receive huge revenues from inbuilt browser search from their own product
The change is only being rollled out in the United States only so Ireland and the rest of the world will still have Google as the default search engine.
